Very early Dance Animal

Dance Animal was founded in Montreal in November 2008 by Robin Henderson.  Inspired by pop culture, pop music, music videos, politics, reality television, fashion, musical theatre, sketch comedy and her own personal travels, Dance Animal is Robin’s love-letter to the city of Montreal.  Wanting to reflect the vast spectrum of languages and cultures of her adopted city, Robin deliberately combines the talents of Anglophone, Francophone and Allophone theatre artists to dynamic results.

Since the premiere of their first (and bilingual) production “Dance Animal Presents:  Dance Animal”, Dance Animal has been smashing box-office records everywhere they perform.  They’ve had record breaking sold-out runs at the Montreal Fringe Festival, the Just For Laughs Festival, Zoofest and the Centaur Theatre’s Wildside Festival.  In 2009 they won the Just For Laughs “Best Comedy” award and were short-listed for the Centaur Theatre  « Best Production » award for their first show « Dance Animal Presents: Dance Animal ».  Pat Donnelly, Theatre Critic for the Montreal Gazette listed « Dance Animal Presents: Dance Animal » as one of the top shows of 2009.  In 2010 they won the Cirque du Soleil « Best Original Creation » award, were given an Honourable Mention for the Studio 303 « Best Choreography » award and were nominated for the MECCA award for Best Ensemble for their show « Dance Animal Presents : Freaks of Nature ». In May 2011 they were voted 2nd Best Dance Company/Choreographer in Montreal by the readers of the Montreal Mirror. In May 2010 they placed 3rd.

Dance Animal also believes in supporting their community. They have performed in over 30 events/fundraisers outside of their festival runs including the Toronto Pride Parade, Concordia University’s Garnet Key Society’s Autism Fundraiser, the Montreal Rollerderby, Faggity Ass Friday – fundraiser for Head and Hands, and the UQAM fundraiser for Ligne Parents.
